 هذا الكتاب هو المصنف الأول من نوعه يعنى بتوثيق تاريخ جامعة قطر على مدى خمسة عقود، كمجتمع فكري وعلمي، وكحافز للتنمية الثقافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية في دولة قطر. يستهل الكتاب فصوله بتمهيدٍ فريدٍ عن الواقع التعليمي في دول الخليج العربي في خمسينيات القرن الماضي، وارتباطاته بالحالة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية السائدة آنذاك في تلك الدول؛ ليقدم بعد ذلك محتوىً منهجيًا شاملًا عن التطور التاريخي لجامعة قطر منذ بدايتها، المتمثلة بكليات إعداد المعلمين للبنين والبنات في عام 1973، ومن ثم إنشاؤها الرسمي في عام 1977، وصولًا إلى هيكليتها الحالية الممتدة إلى نحو تسع كليات وأربعة عشر مركزًا بحثيًا. 
وعلى ما يربو من نصف قرن، يورد الكتاب نماذج عملية يتأكد من خلالها كيف واكبت جامعة قطر مجتمعًا سريع التغير على كافة الأصعدة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية، وأسهمت بفاعلية في تطوير الاقتصاد القائم على المعرفة، ورسخت بذلك مكانتها كرمز وطني لخدمة المجتمع، وتعزيز الصالح العام.

  This book is the first of its kind introducing the history of Qatar University. It charts the five-decade evolution of Qatar University as an intellectual and scholarly community and as a catalyst for the cultural and socio-economic development of Qatar. The book makes the case for educational reality in the context of the prevailing social and economic situation in the Arab peninsula early 1950s. It provides systematic and comprehensive content on the historical sketch of Qatar University from its inception as teacher education colleges for men and women in 1973 through its formal establishment in 1977 to its present status, strengthening its research infrastructure to include nine colleges and fourteen research centers. The book shows how the university has served a society undergoing exceptionally rapid change in every dimension and contributing to the development of a knowledge-based economy. Therefore, the book explains how Qatar University has established itself as an essential national symbol for promoting the public good.
