Return of the Czar: Putin’s Russia

Mike Tager, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science, Marietta College This course focuses on the rise and long reign of Vladimir Putin. It considers how an obscure bureaucrat became president of Russia, the impact of his policies in both stabilizing the Russian economy and state, and in ushering in a new authoritarian regime, and the nature of his increasingly assertive foreign policy that has led Russia into confrontation with the West. The course will conclude by considering the implications of the March 2018 presidential election, which everyone expects to result in an overwhelming Putin victory for another six-year term. How might Russian politics and policies evolve in the late Putin era, and what might a post-Putin Russia look like? Limit: 90 participants Day & Time: Wednesdays, 3-5 PM Dates: March 21, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9 Location: 124 Thomas Hall
