The Open File group listed here are transcriptions of a wide range of field work done by geologist working for the Geological Survey. Quality and amount of material varies. This is not a complete collection of all of the notebooks. Much of this information was used in subsequent publications. Many of the original documents are in other archive collections. This is different from the more contemporary ‘Open File Report’ listing that follows this group

The Glacial History and Development of Michigan, S. G. Bergquist, not dated.
Although hundreds of millions of years of marine activity were involved in laying the sediments which formed the foundational rocks out of which Michigan was developed, the actual sculpturing of the surface and the delineation of the state into a definite physical unit as we know it today was not accomplished until late in the Pleistocene or glacial epoch, only yesterday in geologic time.

It seems quite likely that the molds occurring in the sandstone quarries near Napoleon, Michigan represent thanatoceonose of medusa. The medusa probably did not live in the Marshall Sea as the salinity was much higher than normal sea water.

Item # OF-85: Open File 85: The Grand Traverse Region, A. Winchell, 1866.
The developement of Leelanaw county has been very materially retarded by an extensive Indian Reservation lying in the midst of an active white population. This reservation was made a few months after the first settlement of Northport. Beyond all controversy, the Grand Traverse region offers stronger attractions to capital and settlement than any other portion of the State or of the entire northwest.
