Ethics - Emotional De-Escalation: Ethical Considerations Working with People Experiencing Emotional Distress
In this presentation we explore the ethical obligations (CRCC Code of Ethics) of rehabilitation professionals working with individuals who are experiencing emotional distress. We explore how emotionality is a natural part of the human condition and is amplified by disability and related stressors and life change. We explore how emotional crisis is inevitable, unavoidable, and even necessary in the rehabilitation process. Because of this inevitability, we explore our professional obligation to become more skilled and confident in addressing emotional crisis and distress. And we introduce a conceptual de-escalation model that helps professional prepare for and be come more confident in dealing with emotionally charged crisis.
