Module Overview:
With the information deluge we are immerged in, and this is forecast to increase, there is an increased need for a methodological approach that allows governments and corporations to generate relevant, timely and actionable intelligence. This objective implies assessing and managing risk, maximizing opportunities, assuring compliance, and managing reputation; in short, to make sense of the OSINT world and focus on ways they can find, extract and exploit information that is readily available, though often hidden.
This module is designed to introduce attendees to the collection and analysis of open source and publicly available information, white hacking techniques for stealth collection, methodology for evaluation and validation of sources of open and publicly available information, and OSINT best practices. The module also touches on the managerial aspects associated with activities conducted in the cyberspace domain.

Who should attend
Profile: CIO; CISO; information analysts; threat intelligence analysts; law enforcement (investigations). Prerequisites: Bachelor level and above; preferably B.Sc. in Math, CS, CE, EE, or equivalent work experience.

Module Instructor
Prof. Dr. Roberto Di Pietro is currently a full-time professor of cyber security at the College of Science and Engineering at Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in Qatar, leading the effort to establish a world-class research and innovation center in cyber security. Prior to this, Dr. Di Pietro served as the Global Lead for Security Research at Bell Labs from December 2013 to August 2017. In this capacity, he coordinated three Security Research Depts. based in Paris, Munich, and Espoo, with over 40 researchers and research engineers striving to lead security research in alignment with the strategic business goals, and to move research results into innovation. Besides his position at Nokia Bell Labs, Dr. Roberto Di Pietro was also Professor at the University of Padova (with tenure). Prior to the above assignments, he was a faculty member at the University of Roma Tre (Roma, Italy), always dedicated to security research, research mentoring, and innovation. From 2009-2010 he was a Seconded National Expert to EUROJUST (The Hague). In 2011-2012, he was awarded a Chair of Excellence at University Carlos III, Madrid, for his research results in security. From 2013-2015 he was the scientific director of an EU project devoted to devising novel digital forensics tools to support the investigation of EU anti-cartel agencies. He started his Computer Scientist career in 1995, serving for a few years as senior military technical officer, with the Italian MoD, managing complex ICT projects with focus on security, aimed at supporting investigations and forensics. His research interests include Cloud Security, Distributed Systems Security, Wireless Security, On-line Social Networks Security, Intrusion Detection, Access Control, and Forensics. On these topics, he has published over 170 scientific papers, and has been contributing to patents and books. Dr. Pietro holds a M.Sc. in Computer Science from University of Pisa, a PhD in Computer Science and a Specialization Diploma in Operations Research and Strategic Decisions from University of Roma “La Sapienza”, as well as professional certifications such as CISA, CISSP, CISM, CRISC, CGEIT. As for Google Scholar, he has more than 6700 citations, with h-index=39, and i-index=102.
