Wilderness First Aid Course- April 28 - 29, 2018
  • Wilderness First Aid by Longleaf Wilderness Medicine hosted by Outdoor Adventures in Texas A&M's Department of Recreational Sports, April 28 - 29, 2018.

The Wilderness First Responder certification is the recognized industry standard for people who work in remote environments in jobs that include wilderness guides and trip leaders, camp counselors, research expedition members, and search and rescue team members.

The 76-hour course schedule includes classroom time, as well as extensive hands-on skills practice through medical scenarios and labs. The WFR course does include an in-depth final scenario as well as a written exam.

During the LWM Wilderness First Aid courses, you will learn how to assess patients, to treat common injuries and illness, to provide long-term patient care, and to decide when to call for more help.

You'll learn strategies for prevention of injuries, as well as hands-on skills for treatments like splinting, wound care, and managing spine injuries.

After the course, you'll feel more prepared to handle medical emergencies, treat minor problems, and improvise solutions when help is not available.

  • The LWM Wilderness First Responder training meets the American Camp Association 2012 Standards and is an accepted Wilderness First Responder provider for the Boy Scouts of America. Other opportunities for continuing educations credits and Wilderness Medical Society credits may also exist for pre-hospital professionals and AMS Fellows.

The Wilderness First Aid course sessions will be held at the PEAP building on the College Station campus. Students should be prepared to spend significant amounts of time outside each day, practicing skills on the ground in whatever weather is present.

You must be 16 years of age or older to participate. Though CPR is NOT included in this course, a current CPR certification is required to make the Wilderness First Aid certification valid. The LWM Wilderness First Aid certification is valid for 2 years after completion date.

Registration includes a course book and instruction. Participants will be responsible for their own food. Contact other participants on our Facebook event page. Any questions regarding registration can be directed to Jason Kurten, Outdoor Adventures Director, at 979.845.7035 or

A completed waiver form must be on file for each participant. For participants under the age of 18, a parent or court-appointed legal guardian must read, complete, and sign the waiver.
