The Cultural Explorations Program aims to provide opportunities for students to travel and experience the various cultures and communities across the state. This Cultural Explorations Trip will highlight Chinese Lunar New Year. We will first travel to the Menil Museum to explore the arts of Africa, the Americas and Pacific Northwest, the Pacific Islands, and many more. Next we will explore the Lunar New Year Festival. Dubbed the largest Asian celebration in the state, this visually striking Lunar New Year Festival in Houston is a Texas-sized Asian New Year extravaganza showcasing the rich diversity of the region. This two-day signature event features the authentic New Year tradition with 100+ Lions & Dragons dancing amid ferocious fireworks, world-class martial arts, tempting egg rolls, sweet rice & BBQ, drum performances, and grand displays of one million Lucky Red Firecrackers. This experience will expand students’ knowledge about Chinese culture and how it is woven into the fabric of Texas. Students will be required to complete a risk wavier prior to the trip, and will be required to pay a small registration fee ($20 to cover some trip expenses) to reserve their seat. The registration fee covers: transportation cost to and from Houston on a coach bus, breakfast, snacks, and festival entrance. The trip registration fee ($20) may be paid in cash at the Department of Multicultural Services, Suite 2200 on the second floor of the MSC (ask for Kim Heslip) or electrically here on Marketplace. (a small convenience fee of $1 is added to all electronic payment options). All TAMU students are welcomed to attend this trip. A refund, excluding the $1 processing fee, can be requested no later than 96 hours before the trip. We will be leaving from the Rudder Tower loading zone on Saturday, February 24 at 9:00am, and will return from the trip between 6pm-7pm. The trip itinerary will be emailed to you on the Thursday before the trip. Email Angela C. Jackson with any questions: angela@dms.tamu.edu
