July 9-10: Education Through Movement for Music Educators

Movement can make learning fun and active, engage students’ interest and attention, and increase their retention of skills and concepts. This two day workshop will provide participants with an overview of Phyllis Weikart’s Education Through Movement program. Participants will experience key components of the approach including movement and music key experiences, an effective teaching model, and strategies for successfully integrating movement into all aspects of the music curriculum. Participants will have opportunities to practice and apply course content, and will learn several beginning folk dances and how to teach them quickly. This course is ideal for P8 general music teachers.

Major Course Goals:
- Learn fundamentals of motor development
- Learn to apply motor development principles to activities you already teach
- Learn research based teaching techniques to better engage students
- Learn how to use movement to meet the needs of special populations
- Learn international folk dance progressions organized from a developmental base

Enroll: $150 for 12.5 hours of CEUs
Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: Mason Hall, Fredonia campus

About the instructor:
Dr. Heather Russell is Coordinator of Music Education at Cleveland State University and is an Endorsed Trainer in Phyllis Weikart's Education Through Movement approach. She holds degrees in Music Education and Multicultural Education from Hartwick College, Eastern University, and Temple University. She is certified in Orff-Schulwerk (Level 1) and Music Learning Theory. She has taught general, choral, and instrumental music in New York State, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey public and private schools. She is the co-author of a chapter, "Movement for Musical Development," a chapter in Musicianship-Focused Curriculum and Assessment, and has presented local, regional, state, and national conferences.
