July 8 - 12: Popular Music Pedagogy
July 8 - 12: Popular Music Pedagogy

This course is a one-week, interactive workshop that serves as an introduction to implementing and maintaining Modern Band programs at all levels. Participants will become familiar with the use of technology in music and learn the fundamental playing and teaching techniques for all Modern Band instruments including guitar, keyboard, drums, vocals, hip hop, ukulele and bass. This student-centered approach provides instant music-making experiences by utilizing improvisational activities, recreating familiar popular music selections, and creating new compositions based on style/genre interests. Participants use their new pedagogical knowledge and instrumental skill set to perform original songs they create during the course. The goal of this course is to inspire music educators to leverage the cultural capital of their students and provide a music education experience that will be as diverse as the students they will one day teach.
