Sam Houston State University Policy Information

The TSIA2 tests are designed to provide placement, advisement, and guidance information for students entering institutions of higher education.  These tests are developed by The College Board, with the help of committees of college faculty, to provide information about the student’s level of skill and accomplishment in reading, writing, and mathematics.  It determines which courses are appropriate for the student and whether developmental classes are needed. The TSIA2 presents the tests in a computer-adaptive mode and scores are available immediately after testing.

PRE-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY (PAA) REQUIREMENT: Before taking the TSIA2, all examinees are required to take the Pre-Assessment Activity. If you have not taken the PAA, your application will not be processed. 

REQUIRED PAYMENT INFORMATION: You are required to pay the initial test fee of $50 if this is your first time taking the TSI Assessment. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TEST SCORE ON FILE FOR THE SECTION THAT YOU ARE CHOOSING TO TEST IN, THIS IS CONSIDERED YOUR FIRST TIME TAKING THE EXAM. ALL TEST FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE. Note there may be an additional administration fee when testing remotely. 

If you choose to test at another college/university you are responsible for making sure the testing site is accepting non-students. 

Remote test applications will be processed and completed within 3-5 business days. 

Effective May 16, 2022- Chromebooks are now acceptable for remote testing. 

During online proctoring, specific items are prohibited to have in the room with you. Examity will provide you with only a basic list of prohibited items. Per SHSU policy, please be aware that prohibited items during an online proctoring session include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cameras, cell phones, optical readers, or other electronic devices that include the ability to photograph, photocopy, or otherwise copy test materials
  • Notes, books, dictionaries, or language dictionaries
  • Book bags, purses, handbags, or luggage
  • iPods, MP3 players, tablets, headphones, or pagers
  • Calculators (unless you have a pre-approved accommodation), computers (other than the one you are testing on), PDAs, or other electronic devices with computer memory
  • Google and/or smart glasses (any glasses with electronics)
  • Watches, smart devices, and other jewelry except for wedding or engagement rings
  • Medicine, including cough drops (except as expressly permitted in advance)
  • Food or beverage
  • Hats, hoods, or other head coverings unless required for religious purposes.

A prohibited item violation will result in your test scores being invalidated. You will not be refunded, and you will need to provide payment again to retest
