Archaeology in Israel June 20 - July 14, 2019

June 20 - July 14, 2019

Immerse yourself into the archaeology of Israel. We will excavate at Hazor in northern Israel, a site chosen for its importance in history and the methods of archaeology employed there. We dig with Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Students will participate in all excavation activities, from field work, artifact processing, lectures by experts, and camp life. The day is long, starting at 5 a.m., and can extend until 7 p.m. with frequent breaks and a siesta at mid-day. The lodging for the work week is in a modern kibbutz hostel with good meals, air conditioning, and other amenities. Students should have a strong interest in archaeology, history of the Near East, and related fields, but one does not have to be an archaeologist. We train everyone in the field.

All students will enroll in AN 3581 Archaeological Field School (4 credits, formerly AN 383) or AN 4996 Independent Study and Research (2 or 4 credits, formerly AN 480). Students are suggested to take AN 3562 Archaeology of Judaism (formerly AN 386) and/or REL 1200 Introduction to Judaism (formerly REL 102) prior to participating, but this is not required.

We travel on weekends to places like Jerusalem, with its huge selection of cultural opportunities, shopping, and food. We also travel to ancient places like Rosh Haniqra, Safed and Beit She’an and natural areas such as Banias Nature Reserve. The food in Israel is varied and very tasty: from plentiful vegetables, lamb, beef, and chicken, to amazing hummus, and fun street food. No one goes hungry!

Cost includes round-trip flights from Detroit to Tel Aviv, all accommodation, transportation and academic and cultural activities in Israel, and nearly all meals. The cost of OU tuition for the 2 or 4 credits earned is additional. Thanks to the provost and a number of generous donors for subsidizing program activities.
