Terry Adkins: Soldier Shepherd Prophet Martyr: Videos from 1998-2013

With video descriptions by Kendra Paitz, and Paitz's interviews with Lorna Simpson, Demetrius Oliver, Valerie Cassel Oliver, Joshua Mosley, and Ian Berry.

Terry Adkins (1953–2014) was a multimedia artist and musician who researched historical figures that he deemed "immortal"—including John Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Matthew Henson, and Bessie Smith—often focusing on moments and biographical facts that have escaped our collective memories and the dominant narratives of his subjects' lives.

Published in conjunction with the first survey of Adkins' videos, this catalogue features exhibition curator Kendra Paitz's interviews with the artist's friends and colleagues: artists Lorna Simpson, Demetrius Oliver, and Joshua Mosley; and curators Valerie Cassel Oliver and Ian Berry.

The exhibition and publication were made possible by a grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Programs at University Galleries are supported in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
