Carrie Schneider: Nine Trips Around the Sun

Carrie Schneider: Nine Trips Around the Sun

With essays by Julie Rodrigues Widholm and Joanna Szupinska-Myers, and a conversation between exhibition curator Kendra Paitz and Carrie Schneider.

Nine Trips Around the Sun is the first monograph of work by Brooklyn-based artist Carrie Schneider (born 1979, Chicago). Featuring photographs and films from 2006–2015, the works offer a survey of the artist’s self-described “documents of something performed for the camera” and demonstrate the range of lens-based processes she has employed. In addition to the series Derelict Self, Figure-Ground, Burning House, Moon Drawings, and Summer Drawings, the publication features Schneider's recent series Reading Women, for which the artist photographed and filmed 100 individual female artists, curators, writers, and musicians in their homes and studios as they each read a book of their choosing by a woman author. The project resulted in 100 portraits and a 4-hour film.

Published in conjunction with Schneider’s first comprehensive survey exhibition—presented at University Galleries of Illinois State University in 2015—the book includes essays by Julie Rodrigues Widholm (Director and Chief Curator at DePaul Art Museum, Chicago) and Joanna Szupinska-Myers (Curator of Exhibitions at the California Museum of Photography, University of California Riverside ARTSblock), and an interview with the artist by exhibition curator Kendra Paitz (Senior Curator at University Galleries of Illinois State University).

The exhibition and publication were made possible by a critical grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Programs at University Galleries are supported in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
