Maker Maker Academy (July 6-July 17)

MIX Maker Academy

Build. Design. Invent.

The MIX Maker Academy is a two-week immersive summer program for high school students interested in engineering, robotics, fabrication, and creative technology.

Students will learn to use professional tools in a university makerspace while designing and building their own projects through hands-on, guided instruction.

Program Details

Location: MIX Makerspace & Media Lab
Duration: 2 Weeks
Schedule: Monday–Friday
Time: 10 AM – 4 PM

Limited to 20 students

What You’ll Learn

Participants receive hands-on training in:

• Laser cutting & engraving
• CNC routing and fabrication
• Electronics & soldering
• Robotics, sensors, and motion systems
• CAD design and digital modeling
• Sewing & CNC embroidery
• Vacuum forming and product prototyping
• Vinyl cutting & sublimation printing
• Photo & video production
• Studio lighting techniques
• Augmented & Virtual Reality systems

Students learn how to move from idea to prototype, combining technology, design, and fabrication.

What You’ll Build

Students complete a series of hands-on projects, including:

• Laser-cut mechanical designs
• Interactive electronic devices
• Robotics or motion-based projects
• CNC fabricated objects
• Wearable or textile-based components

In addition, students develop:

Two Larger Custom Projects

Participants design and build original interactive projects of their own ideation, integrating multiple tools and technologies learned throughout the program.

Examples include:
• Interactive objects or installations
• Smart devices or wearables
• Robotics-based builds
• Creative technology prototypes

Build Your Portfolio

Students maintain a daily multimedia blog, documenting their work through:

• Written reflections
• Photos of fabrication processes
• Short videos and demonstrations

This becomes a portfolio showcasing technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving, valuable for college applications and future opportunities.

What Makes This Program Unique

• Access to a university-level makerspace and media lab
• Training on advanced fabrication and media equipment
• Emphasis on hands-on learning and real-world tools
• Integration of STEAM disciplines
• Development of both technical skills and creative thinking
• Guided mentorship from experienced staff
