Cistern Oak Bottle Opener

During the summer of 2016, after nearly 100 years standing witness to College of Charleston convocations, graduations, lifelong friendships, love, and laughter, a majestic Laurel Oak fell in Cistern Yard. Fortunately, alumna and designer Katie Kozar Thompson ’09 volunteered to cure and use the wood to create a collection of objects to display our pride in our alma mater. Proceeds from the sale of Cistern Oak Collection items benefit the Alumni Association’s scholarships and programs for the College.

About the Designer
Katie Kozar Thompson ’09 is the proprietor of Black Swamp, a line of naturally inspired jewelry hand crafted in Eutawville, SC. Using fine hardwoods and other high quality materials, each piece is an original design crafted in the very swamps the line is named for just outside of Charleston, SC. Inspired by the classic and natural beauty of wood combined with metal and other materials, Katie conceptualized Black Swamp as result of efforts to recycle wood shavings made during the furniture making process in her and her husband's wood shop. Katie is also one half of Joseph Thompson Woodworks where she designs and handcrafts furniture, home décor, and art installations with her husband Joseph Thompson. Their designs have been shown at fine art exhibitions and craft shows around the United States as well as at High Point Market. In addition to designing Katie is also a freelance writer and currently serves as the Membership Coordinator for her local CSA, Pinckney's Produce. Katie earned a BA in Communication from the College of Charleston and has previously worked with TheDigitel.com, the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, and has interned with Redux Contemporary Arts Center in Charleston, SC.
