The Firearms Instructor Certification module is designed to provide basic concepts of law enforcement firearms instruction and to increase the quality of professional law enforcement training. This course incorporates skills from the Basic Instructor Course (TCOLE 1014). All attendees are required to have been awarded a TCOLE Basic Instructor Certificate. The module introduces the student to developing physical skills based lesson plans, firearms and range safety, range assessment/requirements and how to adapt accordingly. Students will be required to demonstrate the basic knowledge and skills required to effectively instruct a classroom lesson on an assigned topic and run the range on an assigned course of fire. On the first day, each student MUST qualify at 90% on the TCOLE prescribed courses of fire with their handgun and shotgun (2 attempts). Access to a computer with MS Office is highly encouraged.

Student Prerequisites:
  • Not prohibited by state or federal law or rule from attending training related to firearms or from possessing a firearm.
  • Never had a license or certificate issued by the Commission suspended or revoked.
  • Currently holds an Instructor Certificate of Proficiency issued by the Commission.
  • Currently employed or designated by the agency chief administrator or academy coordinator as a firearms instructor.
  • Have at least three years’ experience as either a law enforcement officer or a firearms instructor.
Required Equipment:
 
  • Handgun and Ammunition
  1. 350 rounds of factory loaded, jacketed handgun ammunition
  2. 10 round factory loaded 12 gauge 00 buckshot
  3. 10 rounds factory loaded .12 gauge slugs
  • Safety equipment (Patrol rated ballistic vest, ear and eye protection, cap with a bill or brim is optional)
  • Firearm cleaning equipment
