DIRECTING ON A BUDGET

3-week workshop
Mondays:  May 12, 19, and June 2
7:00pm to 9:00pm
in person at OSU-Tulsa

This course introduces the techniques of digital video and audio production including basic terminology and the operation of cameras, lenses, lighting, audio recording, and digital editing equipment.

Through lectures, screenings, and hands-on exercises we will explore the relevant production aesthetics and practices of digital filmmaking.

Students shall be able to apply knowledge gained from class into filmmaking, television, podcasts and marketing and learn how to create their projects economically.

COURSE GOALS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After taking this course, the student shall demonstrate a firm grasp and understanding of:
•    The basic technical skills and fundamentals involved in digital video and audio.
•    The overall creative process includes pre-production, production and post-production.
•    Pre-Production paperwork including shot lists, overheads and call sheets.
•    Aesthetic choices that impact composition, style, genre, and production design.
•    Proper screenplay format, character development and goal cycles, act structure, and writing scripts for the short film format.
•    Editing and the use of non-linear editing software.
•    Critical assessment and the ability to evaluate the work of themselves and their peers from an analytical perspective.
Directing on a micro budget topics shall be explored. 
◦    How to create an efficient cost-saving and quality film.
◦    How to save money on set through planning.
◦    Effective Marketing Plan
 
Featuring Instructor:  Mathew Thomas Foss
Mathew Thomas Foss is a filmmaker with over 20 years of experience in the industry.

He made his directorial debut with the award-winning Roman Bickerstaff: The Rise and Fall of an RA, and has since worked on a diverse range of projects, from high-budget films like Sironia (starring Tony Hale and Amy Acker) to indie features like Papaw Land.

Mathew is a graduate of the prestigious ActOne screenwriting school and holds a Master’s in Digital Cinema, with honors and distinction for his thesis film Theoria, which is currently in development as a feature.

As co-founder of Book 7 Entertainment, a production house based in Arkansas, Mathew has collaborated on film, TV, and internet content with companies nationwide.

He has produced over 100 episodes of television, including his own series SEEK, which aired on EWTN.

With 10 years of cinematic teaching experience, Mathew has worked with five universities and one governor's school, helping to shape the next generation of filmmakers.

Despite his extensive career, Mathew finds his greatest fulfillment in inspiring students and watching them bring their own creative visions to life.
