FROM PREP TO POST:  THE ART OF CINEMATOGRAPHY

With this course, award-winning Director of Photography Charles Elmore will guide students through the ins and outs of photographing documentaries and narrative films.

He will use personal case studies to
  • illustrate how to break down a script,
  • developing the DP/Director relationship,
  • how to prepare a gear list,
  • hiring a camera crew as well as interacting with departments to ensure the best collaborative results.
Additionally he will share his approach to developing a specific language and style for the project and the DP’s role in post-production. 
 
Featuring Instructors:  Charles Elmore and Jake Basnett
Charles Elmore is a filmmaker from Tulsa, Oklahoma who studied film and video production at the Art Institute of Seattle. Since returning to Oklahoma in 2000, He has provided his skills as an editor, operator and director of photography on various projects including commercials, docu-series, reality TV series, along with narrative shorts, features and documentaries.

He has worked in feature films and documentaries including Hell In The Heartland (Discovery), Minari (A24), Fancy Dance, and Reservation Dogs (FX/Hulu).

In the fall of 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as cinematographer on the indie feature Out Of Exile (Saban Films), which was one of two films in Oklahoma used as a model for safe production measures during the pandemic. The film celebrated a theatrical and streaming premiere in 2023.

Additionally, working as a camera operator on documentary series and features, Charles is an advocate for a strong local film community and supports the local film community in Oklahoma and Tulsa where he resides.

Charles is also a member of the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle, an organization of Oklahoma-based critics with the overall mission to support film culture and advance film conversation within the state.In 2024 he launched The Tulsa Film Collective with Reservations Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo.
Jake Basnett is an IATSE Gaffer and Key Grip with a decade of experience.

His recent narrative credits include Reservation Dogs, Fancy Dance, Stranger Things and Killers of The Flower Moon.

He has worked commercially with Apple, Nike, Samsung, Google, and Meta. His Music Video credits span from Iggy Azalea, The Chainsmokers, and Hobo Johnson to Blake Shelton, Every Time I Die and Luke Combs. He is based out of Claremore, Oklahoma.
