Writing to Publish: Short Genres: *Grades 6-12

This workshop will be held weekly via Zoom on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:00 p.m. (Central Time Zone) beginning October 13th through December 1st. Participants will need access to a laptop or iPad with an updated version of Zoom as well as their own paper notebook. What kind of writer are you? In this seven-week workshop, students will read short, engaging works by published writers, study how they work, and then try the genres themselves. We’ll explore short fiction, nonfiction, and poetry with plenty of time to draft, experiment, share, and revise. Each week, we’ll read like writers and write like writers, using great mentor texts to discover new possibilities for our own work. You’ll build a collection of short pieces across several genres, with the opportunity to develop one or more pieces for publication in group chapbook at the end of the workshop.

There is a $35.00 enrollment fee for the program; this covers instruction and access to resources. Applications will be accepted until September 30, 2026 or until spots are filled. Early enrollment is encouraged as a limited number are available. Attendance is very important to this workshop, so please be sure to register only if you think you know your student's schedule allows them to make this weekly commitment. Students who miss two tutoring sessions may be dropped from the program for the semester, and the fee will NOT be refunded. Students with excessive absences may not be allowed to return for in future semesters.

Sessions are recorded throughout the semester for current and/or future research, diagnostic, and/or instructional purposes. To reach optimum efficiency, assessments and evaluations may be administered to determine initial placement, identification of strengths, needs, and progress. Whenever student records are used in an instructional situation, confidentiality is maintained in compliance with the Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (PL 93-380).Whenever student records are used for research purposes, confidentiality is maintained in compliance with the OSU Institutional Review Board and Title 45 Code of Federal Regulations Part 46 (45 CFR 46 "Basic HHS Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects”).
