BreakBeat Poets (All levels--poetry)

BreakBeat Poets (All levels--poetry)
The workshop will be Saturday, March 9, 2019 and Sunday, March 10, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in Main Hall 2440.

Poetry is experiencing a renaissance due primarily to the insistence of Hip-Hop’s cultural, public practice. Hip-Hop is the largest youth culture the globe has ever witnessed. It has given birth to a new generation of poets who translate and capture the ethos of the culture in their verse. Similar to the effects of Blues in the Harlem Renaissance and Jazz in the Black Arts Movement, Hip-Hop’s music and cultural force has shaped the aesthetics and given rise to a new generation of American poets.

This multifaceted workshop opportunity explores the influence of Hip Hop on contemporary poetry, in terms of both craft and content. BreakBeat Poets editor Quraysh Ali Lansana will introduce various methods and approaches for writing poetry/bars that reflect 40 years of Hip-Hop culture. The workshop will include writing and performance, and will include the core elements of Hip Hop, Social Justice inquiry and media consciousness.
