Let's Learn Japanese!

Japanese is headed to TAMIU this Spring! Instructor Eileen Velasco is excited to teach this challenging yet amazing language to participants of all ages. Join us as we proudly host our 1st Japanese Language series . It will be offered as part of our personal enrichment series at TAMIU this Spring 2020. Come learn a new international skill!

Eileen Velasco is an avid language learner. She holds the internationally recognized Japanese Language Proficiency Test N3 Certificate and is thrilled to share her language experience with you. Her journey as a foreign language teacher began in a fully-bilingual school in Monterrey, Mexico where she learned how to properly apply the language immersion method. Eileen later lived in Okinawa, Japan for over eleven years where she taught English, Spanish, and Japanese at an International School. During her stay in Japan she was fascinated by the culture, Japanese mannerisms, and writing systems. When you attend this course you will enjoy absorbing everything Japanese, in a manner that is natural to your brain as she applies the psychology processes for language development. Upon her return from Japan, Eileen taught French and English at ICUM de Monterrery and was awarded "best foreign language teacher" because the university students were able to understand and speak a new language at the end of the course, not just pass a test. Ms. Velasco was raised bilingual and is passionate about learning languages that she is now working on her 5th and 6th language. Together with her experience, passion and enthusiasm, she hopes more people will fall in love with the Japanese language.

This introductory Japanese Language course will cover the ability to hold basic conversations among peers and recognize important symbols. Students will tackle the three writing systems, but never in a remote memorization form which can be boring and ineffective. As they travel through the lessons in the Japanese for Busy People textbook, students will also hear about what is important to do and avoid when traveling to Japan, peppered with unforgettable anecdotes. Because Eileen learned Japanese as an adult, she will make learning and retaining a new vocabulary a breeze by making it relevant and allowing ample time to practice. If you like "manga" (Japanese novel-like comics), this course will give you the skills to start reading it. If you like traveling, this course will ensure you enjoy your trip to Japan even more. If you like learning something new, this course is for you!
